MBA Programs in Nunavut
Nunavut is Canada's newest territory, and its largest. Until 1999, the territory formed part of the Northwest Territories. Nunavut means "our land" in Inuktitut, and nearly 84 percent of the territory's population identifies itself as Inuit. While this aboriginal influence is present in the region's largely resource-based economy--with its strong fishing, hunting and trapping activity--new industries are emerging. According to the Nunavut Department of Economic Development, mining remains one of the largest sectors, though gas and tourism are gaining speed. The DED reports that the business sector is also on the move: The number of companies located in Nunavut grew by 40 percent between 1999 and 2006, thanks in part to federal and territorial business incentives.
Graduates of MBA Programs May Find Opportunity in Iqaluit
The capital, Iqaluit, is Nunavut's largest city and has shown fast population growth. The Canadian government reports that Iqaluit is bursting with economic development, including a fast-growing professional services sector. Education options in Iqaluit include Nunavut Arctic College, which is a member of the University of the Arctic network of institutions.
While mining and transportation remain strong in Iqaluit, emerging industries, like design and eco-tourism, offer new opportunities. Some of the region's largest employers include the Miramar Mining Corporation, Cumberland Resources and Northern Transportation Company Limited. Career opportunities are expanding for those attending business schools, in Nunavut and elsewhere in Canada.
